Samuda laments state of JUTC operations
5:16 pm, Wed May 8, 2013
Karl Samuda, Opposition Spokesman on Transport, armed with documents from the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has pointed to what he said is the worsening state off affairs at the Government-run entity. He said the JUTC is racking up huge losses due to buses being parked waiting to be repaired.
Mr. Samuda did not hold back as he quoted from a list that outlined problems....some minor which were to be addressed in order to have more buses up and running. He pointed out that in some instances JUTC buses have been waiting for repairs for more than 200 days.
The Opposition Spokesman said despite getting 50 new buses bringing the JUTC's fleet to 474 as recent as this month, only 250 busses are road worthy. He said the shortage translates to a daily loss of J$3.5 million or J$1 billion annually
He said a fare increase should not be granted to the JUTC until it gets its house in order. The Opposition Spokesman pointed out that the inefficiencies in the operations of the state run bus company have led to an increase in commuter reliance on private buses and taxis. He has requested that an immediate audit be done on the JUTC.
