THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!
"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.
"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
AVID (last name withheld), the young security guard heavily criticised for denying former Jamaica and West Indies fast-bowling giant, Ambassador Courtney Walsh, access to the North Stand at Sabina Park, said he did not know the cricket great by face. Insisting it was never his intention to knowingly stop Walsh from entering the venue, the security guard spoke exclusively to SportGlobe about the much-publicised April 27 incident. David said he had to seek verification of the former West Indies star before granting him access. “If it was Chris Gayle, I would not try to deny him access to the stands, because I know what Gayle looks like,” he said.
MORE PATIENCE
Employed to Ranger Protection & Security Company, ironically headquartered in front Sabina Park, David said had Walsh been more patient, he would have gained access, as he was making every effort to contact someone in authority who could verify the renowned former cricketer. “He was trying to hurry me, but I have to do my job and carry out the orders my supervisors gave me,” said the soft-spoken young man who has a seemingly respectful and well-mannered personality.
David admitted he is “not too much of a sports person”, though he is aware of Walsh’s contribution to cricket. “If I had known it was Mr Walsh, I would not stop him from going up. Mr Walsh does not need a pass to come into Sabina Park. He helped to build cricket in this country and he has a stand named after him, so I wouldn’t deny him if I knew it was him,” he added.
NEW LOCATIONS
He, however, pointed to the difficulties new security personnel face in indentifying people when they are posted at new locations. “Sometimes when you are seeing people for the first time, you to have to verify them until you become more familiar with them,” he explained. Noting that Walsh was obviously angered by the delay, David said the ambassador spoke to him in a reasonable tone for most of their conversation, “although he said something that I did not like, but I guess he was angry”. Meanwhile, David said his employer has backed him 100 per cent for his actions and commended him for a job well done. However, he said people he knew socially have been giving him some stick. “Some people say how could I stop the great man from coming through, while others understand that I am just doing my job. “Sometimes people treat us (security guards) as if we’re nothing. But I don’t feel any way (about the incident). I’m a security guard and such things are all in a day’s work,” he said.
