US Experts Want $53m for Drug Resistant Gonorrhea

Medical experts at the US National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) have asked the government for $53m to fight a drug-resistant strain of gonorrhea.
William Smith of the NCSD stated that if the money to prepare for the drug-resistant gonorrhea HO41 is not granted the country could spend as much as $780 on treatment instead.
The NCSD said that this strain showed up in Japan two years ago, but that the number of infections in the US is still low.
Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine, said he believes the bacteria could spread quickly and might be a more serious problem than HIV and AIDS in the short-term.
Gonorrhea is usually spread through unprotected sex with an infected person.
