The learning issue is NOT Math OR Robotics...so the premise of the question as posed is stupid
This is the mission of Robotics in high schools:
Brandeis University Study -- FIRST Robotics Competition
Brandeis University’s Center for Youth and Communities conducted an independent, retrospective survey of FIRST Robotics Competition participants and compared results to a group of non-FIRST students with similar backgrounds and academic experiences, including math and science.
When compared with the control group, FIRST Robotics students are:
More than 3 times as likely to major specifically in engineering.
Roughly 10 times as likely to have had an apprenticeship, internship, or co-op job in their freshman year.
Significantly more likely to expect to achieve a post graduate degree.
More than twice as likely to expect to pursue a career in science and technology.
Nearly 4 times as likely to expect to pursue a career specifically in engineering.
More than twice as likely to volunteer in their communities.
One can either accept such data-validated outcomes as valuable for education and Jamaica's development or...not

I am NOT a mathematician by any means, wuss yet Robotics, BUT logic tells me that if you are to succeed/excel in Robotics, maths has to figure in there? Don1? How can you do any kind of computer (high level) programming without some good basic maths skills?
There is some basic maths but the value I have seen in robotics for high school age students is that it also incorporates programming, construction, mechanics, electronics just to name a few areas, and it is FUN!
Great way to explore possibilities in science , technology, engineering fields.
Yep... We chose robotics as a fulcrum for STEM education because it drives multiple tech disciplines in an applications environment.... math, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, construction design, software design, engineering and programming.
The fact that kids build something they consider "cool" while practising those tech subjects makes robotics an absolutely killer app for education....we have to turn away most of the 150 plus kids who want to join the club annually to learn how to actually build sitten... as opposed to sitting in a classroom in rote learning & regurgitation mode
I can think of nothing that captures the attention of students better...well except for music. sports & sex
