Thieves jet off with $20m worth of airplane fuel

Highly placed police sources have confirmed that more than 200,000 litres of jet fuel has been stolen from the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James.

The fuel, valued at $20 million, is owned by a consortium, including Jamaica Aircraft Refuelling Services (partnership between PetroJam and British Petroleum), Esso and Total.

The fuel was stored in a fuel farm near the old domestic terminal to the western end of the airport. The farm supplies fuel to all the aircraft that come into the airport. The farm has a number of underground pipes that lead to the tarmac where the planes are refuelled.

The incident occurred between 9 o'clock Monday night and 4 o'clock on Tuesday morning.

Jet fuel is a high grade of kerosene which can be used in diesel engines. There are several vehicles in Jamaica that carry diesel engines, particularly buses, trucks and tractors.

A fuel contractor at the airport confirmed the incident, but would not go any further, stating that it was a delicate and dangerous issue.

Is this the new norm? I get very nervouse when people start to mess around airplane fuel. Don't they have cameras anywhere along the route to the fuel farm?
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

This is getting ridiculous now. What about the airport security? How can "thieves" enter airport restricted areas to get to the location where airplane fuel is stored? If they can steal this fuel, then can leave stuff. This should be the leading headline that should be investigated at the highest level. This is a matter where the Minister of National Security and the Prime Minister get invlolved and heads roll. People at the very highest level needs to lose their jobs. This is a breach of national security.

Heads roll? The only people rolling heads are the Klansmen. Don't think you want them involved.
