Dear Editor,
The abusive and excessive force of the Jamaican police is undoubtedly getting from bad to worse. Even the once docile so-called special constables (aka blue bags) have got into the act of wanton and blatant abuse of our citizens - the very people they all pledged to "serve and protect".
Did you see their latest barefaced attack on some women vendors in the Coronation Market which was featured on CVM TV's Newswatch on Friday April 13, during which "blue bags" (men and women) attacked and abused the TV camera crew to prevent the public from seeing their dastardly deeds? It seems clear that the police force is fast descending to the level of a goon squad ... one with more powers than regular thugs.
If this is the best we can do in claiming to have a police force, then we would be better off without one.
These rotten eggs in the force are clearly more dangerous than the regular, ordinary criminals, since these thugs moonlighting as police personnel wear a legal cloak (of so-called law and order) which trick decent citizens into a false sense of security and hence greater risk of being caught off-guard by outlaws parading as lawmen.
The recent vicious attack on Dr Jephthah Ford (who incidentally has given free service to so many members of the police force) is another wake-up call. I'm livid about the attack on Dr Ford, but hope it will serve as a turning point to bring to a halt this long-standing and growing threat to our safety and freedom.
And if the recent allegations from within the ranks of the Constabulary Force itself regarding strange and questionable promotions of members who were leap-frogged into top positions (as high as senior superintendent) are further indications of the ugly realities, then we are in an even more frightening, dangerous and desperate situation.
If the commissioner of police presiding over this rotting force does not want to be seen as aiding and abetting these bad eggs in the force, he should take appropriate action or step aside. If the good men and women do not take a stand to rid the organisation of the thugs, then they must be prepared to be blanketed and tainted by the same negative stigma.
And if our current rulers want to convince us that this is not a part of their deliberate design to supress us in their overall plan to "Mugabe -dise" Jamaica, then the government must do something about it or resign, if it has no interest, will or guts to honestly and properly run rather than ruin our island home.
