Shaw, who was making his contribution to the 2013/14 Budget Debates at Gordon House in Kingston, took the Administration to task for the state of the Net International Reserves, which he said has declined to less than the benchmark of 12 weeks of imports at US$884.0 million — the lowest level in over 11 years — as well as the depreciating dollar, which yesterday stood at J$99.48 to US$1.00.
"Some companies are quietly cutting staff as they are unable to get foreign exchange to purchase raw materials. In consequence, prices have moved to new and unprecedented atmospheric heights, with the price of basic foods increasing at an alarming rate, much higher than the officially stated average inflation rate," Shaw said, noting that basic food prices have increased by a range of 20 to 60 per cent over the past 16 months.>
