    Americans dominate Billboard reggae

    AMERICAN performers continue to dominate the Billboard Reggae Album Chart, according to the latest issue of the respected publication.
    Six of the top 10 albums are by Americans, including Reggae Worship: A Roots Revival by veteran band Christafari.

    The next two spots are also occupied by 'Yanks', namely Peace Of Mind by California band Rebelution and Spark Seeker by Jewish rapper Matisyahu.
    The popular VP Records compilation Reggae Gold 2012, comes in at number four while Marley: The Original Soundtrack to the documentary directed by Kevin MacDonald of Scotland rounds out the top five.
    Ocean Is My Potion, an EP done by Bermuda-reared singer Mishka is number six.
    Strength To Survive from Virginia's SOJA occupies the number seven spot, followed by singer/guitarist Josh Heinrichs' EP, Rooftop Session.
    Two reggae veterans complete the top 10. Jimmy Cliff's Rebirth, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in February, is at nine followed by One Love, One Life, the double disc from Beres Hammond.
    The Billboard Reggae Album Chart is one of the smallest of that publication's lists, with sales by entrants rarely breaking the 50,000 mark.
    In its end-of-year sales tally for 2012, SoundScan revealed dismal returns for albums by leading Jamaican dancehall/reggae artistes such as Sean Paul and I-Octane.
    The figures for American journeyman bands like SOJA, Rebelution and John Brown's Body were far more encouraging.

    Good, more people embracing the music. Pay attention to what is heavily rotated on the air. When Potential Kid got heavy rotation yet decent tunes by Peetah Morgan, Chronixx had to be found on youtube.

      Zip FM is an urban station...they are gonna play what is "hot"...Chronixx dancehall stuff gets played...nobody of this generation waan listen to no Peter Morgan...hell I don't want to listen to Peter Morgan...yuh need to stop listen Zip and tune in to one of the "lesser" stations if yuh waan hear that...

        ZIP, hardly listen to them. All the DJs play the same set a music.

          Call mi when your artist deh pon Billboard, or when him a mash up itunes.
          Nuff a dem so-called big tunes a yard have no worldwide appeal, and dem a restrict themselves to a smaller market. Nuttin nuh wrong in meking a tune fi the local market, but dem fi look fi broad dem appeal.

                  P.S. Potential Kid is not my artist...he had a hit song...simple...a song that LIME liked so much they signed him to a contract

                    Lazie Peter Morgan has channel to get out his music only that it is not in Ja. Jamaican market is small and too much Payola as them want money so it is easier for certain musicians spend their time promoting their thing in Europe, Cali, new England, France and other countries plus online.

                      I heard Protoge and Chronixx said that they have songs that are big in other parts of the world and if they should perform those songs locally people would look at them as if they're mad.

                      Peter Morgan is a reggae singer, he is better off going elsewhere because Jamaicans seem to appreciate the crap like yahso nice.

                          I agree Sass, the point I am making is that good music is being produced, but for whatever reason crap like yahso nice get serious rotation.
