Spaldings Market Matter Draws More Backlash

The Jamaica Civil Society Coalition (JCSC), in a release to the media yesterday, said it deplored the poor management and lack of accountability that continue to be shown by "too many of the nation's elected representatives, ministries, departments and agencies".
"We find it totally unacceptable that in this time of hardship, public officers continue to disregard their duty to ensure lawful, prudent and transparent management of the nation's resources," the JCSC said.
The coalition stated that "sloppiness and corruption in the management of the country's affairs" have been major contributors to Jamaica's declining fortunes and the erosion of trust and confidence in public officials over the past several decades.
"The unauthorised construction and irregular arrangements for the rental of shops at the Spaldings Market are a case in point. The reported handling of this arrangement illustrates an appalling level of incompetence and carelessness on the part of the member of parliament, council and parish managers involved, and begs for a thorough investigation of the affair."
The JCSC called for a full investigation by the offices of the Contractor General and Auditor General, implementation of the Public Bodies Management and Accountability Act and for "all applicable sanctions to begin to be swiftly applied to errant members of the Cabinet, Parliament and councils who flout applicable laws and regulations and are derelict in their fiduciary responsibilities".
