Davoit Kelly, Staff ReporterWhether it's due to a sliding dollar, wage freezes or a global financial crunch, the grocery money just doesn't stretch as far as it used to.
Using data from the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) on 13 typical basic food items, a comparison of the average prices from March 2012 showed increases in most of them. The data also differentiated the prices at both shops and supermarkets.
A one-kilogram Best Dressed Chicken flew from $368.95 to $397.82 in shops, and in supermarkets from $363.60 to $393.34. Dried salt fish at the shop was going for $918.18 this March, a jump from $787.93 last year. On supermarket shelves, the jump was from $740.22 to $869.82. Another big mover was the Betty Sweetened Condensed Milk (397 gram) which went from $158.93 to 190.75 in shops and from $150.89 up to $188.79 in supermarkets.
One kilogram of counter flour rose from $93.62 to $110.52 in shops, and $80.44 to $96.07 in supermarkets. A 340-gram can of Grace Corned Beef has moved from $230.30 to $289.43 in shops, while in supermarkets the same tin went from $225.81 to $280.97. Lasco's 80-gram Milk Powder packet went from $93.88 to $111.88 in shops, and $87.67 to $98.54 in supermarkets.
It wasn't all gloomy though as the average cornmeal price has been reduced. In shops in March 2012, a one-kilogram pack of cornmeal went for $114, compared to $109.38 in March this year. The price is virtually the same in supermarkets over the period, $104.38 in 2012 and $104.07 this year.
