Robotics, Inspire!
The Jamaica College Robotics team ventured to New York once more to compete in the NYC FIRST Robotics competition held March 6 -8, 2013 at the Jacob Javits Convention Centre.
Armed with the knowledge from their previous competitions, the school entered for the first time two teams, a Junior and Senior team. With a delegation of nineteen students and five advisors, the team was determined to leave an impressionable mark at the competition.
With the guidance of their advisors, Mrs. Rudolph-Blake, Mrs. Dawkins, Ms. McKinley, Mr. Bennet and Mr. Anderson who assisted via Skype, the teams not only overcame the numerous technical obstacles but took home the most coveted award, the Inspire Award.
The team began their victorious quest with a warm breakfast at the Norman International Airport provided by Burger King – Jamaica and met briefly with the manager of Fly Jamaica. The team was not only greeted warmly by the staff of Fly Jamaica but was also warmly received at their hotel in New York.
The Junior team, Team 6899, consisted of seven members, competed in six matches and won three of the six matches while the Senior team, Team 3981 which consisted of 10 members, won only two of their four matches.
The Junior team was able to advance to the semi-finals and though both teams did not make it to the finals, it was the Senior team’s high quality engineering notebook that won them the Competition’s Inspire Award.
“Though neither of the two teams made it to the finals we are elated to have won such a prestigious award,” remarked team captain, Gavin Samuels.
The Senior team will now advance to the World Championship for the very first time in the four years of competing to compete against teams from Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia, Korea, India and the United States. The competition will be held April 24 – 27, 2013 in St. Louis, Missouri.
“When team 3981 heard that they won the INSPIRE award, the top award, they were all extremely enthused and ran up to the area in a storm with notebooks in hand and graciously accepted the award. We paraded through the Javits Centre with the banner, trophy and medallions we had just received and naturally, some of the members cried a bit but they were all tears of joy,” exclaimed Gavin.
According to the chief judge’s report, “As a team, these young adults weren’t just good engineers, but managed their resources as if they were a full-fledged corporation. This was evident in their professional presentation and in the way they documented their engineering adventure. This team excelled in technical aptitude as well as community service. This team exemplifies what FIRST represents, and showed us how science and technology is truly an international language. This team is an inspiration to us all.
