...For those wallowing in ignorance and with their noses stuck where the sun don't shine... This is how the real world works

How The CIA Created The Jamaican Shower Posse
    Jun 3, 2010 63 By Casey Gane-McCalla

With the recent violence in Jamaica and the controversy over alleged drug lord, Christopher “Dudus” Coke, many people are talking about the infamous Jamaican Shower Posse and the neighborhood of Tivoli Gardens, where they have their base. What is being is being ignored largely by the media, is the role that the American government and the CIA had in training, arming and giving power to the Shower Posse.

It is interesting that the USA is indicting Christopher “Dudus” Coke, the current leader of the Shower Posse for drug and gun trafficking, given that the CIA was accused of smuggling guns into Jamaica and facilitating the cocaine trade from Jamaica to America in the 70s and 80s.

In many ways Dudus was only carrying on a tradition of political corruption, drug running, guns and violence that was started with the help of the CIA.

Christopher “Dudus” Coke’s father was was Lester Coke, also known as Jim Brown, one of the founders of the Shower Posse and a fellow champion and protector of the impoverished Tivoli Gardens neighborhood in Kingston. Coke was a political enforcer and bodyguard to Edward Seaga, the leader of the Jamaican Labour Party.

Seaga’s opponent Michael Manley had begun to adopt “socialist” stances and began openly criticizing American foreign policies and meeting with U.S. enemy, Fidel Castro, in the 1970s. Given the cold war the US was having with Russia, the CIA did not want Jamaica to be friendly with communists.

According to Gary Webb’s book,”The Dark Alliance,” Norman Descoteaux, the CIA station chief in Jamaica began a destabilization program of the Manley government in late 70s. Part of that plan was assassinations, money for the Jamaican Labour Party, labor unrest, bribery and shipping weapons to Manley’s opponents, like Lester “Jim Brown” Coke.

Author, Daurius Figueira writes in his book, “Cocaine And Heroin Trafficking In The Caribbean,” “In fact, it meant that illicit drug runners linked to the JLP were integrated into a CIA linked illicit drugs guns and criminal trafficking pipeline.”

Former CIA agent, Philip Agee, said “the CIA was using the JLP as its instrument in the campaign against the Michael Manley government, I’d say most of the violence was coming from the JLP, and behind them was the CIA in terms of getting weapons in and getting money in.”

One of Lester Coke’s associates, Cecil Connor, would claim that he was trained by the CIA to fight political wars for the JLP through killing and spying. Connor would stuff ballot boxes and intimidate voters to help the JLP win elections.

Connor would go on from being a political thug to being part of the international Jamaican based cocaine ring known as the Shower Posse. He wound up testifying against Lester Coke and his cohort Vivian Blake, only to return to his native St. Kitts to become a drug kingpin who almost held the country hostage.

Christopher “Dudus” Coke’s father, Lester Coke has also been accused of working with the CIA. Timothy White speculates, in his biography of Bob Marley, “Catch A Fire,” that Jim Brown was part of a team of armed gunman that attempted to assassinate Bob Marley led by JLP enforcer Carl “Byah” Mitchell.

Authors Laurie Gunst and Vivien Goldman also make the same assertions in their books, “Born Fi Dead” and “The Book Of Exodus.” Marley’s manager Don Taylor claims that one of Marley’s attackers was captured and admitted that the CIA had agreed to pay him in cocaine and guns to kill Marley.

Dem tripe deh debunk lang time Comrade.. update yuhself.. is 2013.. man confess convict and hang decades go...

<Yet , even as it stands, the statement is serious : the meaning of sovereignty and statehood for independent Caribbean countries has to be reassessed . To obtain some perspective , however, it is important to note that the PNP won the elections with which the year of destabilisation culminated by huge margin! It gained all but 13 of the 60 seats in the Jamaican parliament.

By this test destabilisation , narrowly defined , does not seem to have had much effect. In the longer run, the violence and the propaganda took their toll, but what really damaged the Manley regime beyond repair was the decline of the Jamaican economy after 1976.

For this phenomenon explanations have to be sought beyond destabilisation.>

Run along now.. guh build one robot or sumting useful..

investigative reporters and authors.. lol !!

Wheh yuh seh.. yuh nuh believe Keeble Munn !

          Wheh bout Ken Chaplin ?

<The whole allegation of the CIA's destabilisation of the PNP government began in 1975 at a meeting of the Inter-American Federation of Journalists in Mexico City, Mexico, where I led a delegation from the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ). The other members of the delegation were journalists Gloria Maragh and Ben Brodie. At the meeting, the Cuban delegation moved a resolution that the JLP in conspiracy with the CIA was creating violence in Jamaica so that the PNP would not win the 1976 general elections. I opposed the resolution on the grounds that there was no evidence to support this statement. After an intense struggle with the Cubans and other "progressive" forces at the meeting, the PAJ's position prevailed.
At the time I was secretary of the Press Association of Jamaica and editor of the Editorial Division of the government Jamaica Information Service (JIS). When the delegation returned home, I was severely punished for the stand I had taken. A hard-line communist was immediately brought in to replace me and I was shifted to the Public Relations Department as chief public relations officer under director of public relations, PNP George Lee, who is now mayor of Portmore.
Of course, the CIA was operating in Jamaica at the time, it was said, collecting political information and watching if the PNP would march from democratic socialism to orthodox socialism or communism with the backing of Cuba. There were a host of Cuban agents in Jamaica between 1975 and 1980, some unofficially advising the JIS. I knew the CIA's station chief, only whose first name I will mention. His name is Jack and he was quite popular in political circles. He bore a striking resemblance to the late Clark Gable, the famous American movie actor.
For a long period the communists at the JIS and JBC regarded me as a reactionary, and put me under severe pressure which ended only after Prime Minister Michael Manley and Minister of National Secretary Keeble Munn made it clear that the CIA was never involved in the destabilisation of Jamaica.>

Don2 Yuh ah get really tiresome now wid yuh 70's propaganda.. thou dost protest too much... time yuh leggo yuh household tendencies..

Who is dis Ken Chaplin...does he have any political allegiance or history in JA??

Also did he in this "investigative" (LOL) piece petition US Govt agencies for relevant info under the FOIA?? Did he interview sources who have written on the subject after their own extensive research??

The answer is NO. He is lazy or unconcerned about finding truth....there is no work displayed here. I guess that's how Jamaican journalists roll

His opinion means nothing in the scheme of things

As to Keeble Munn allegedly saying that the CIA was not involved in destabilizing Jamaica....I don't know if what Chaplin claims is true.

I do know that there is no way Keeble Munn can know that for sure... PLUS when you're trying to build a relationship wid Babylon after a period of tension...one doesn't bring up CIA activity in public...one has to be a sensible hypocrite. ...kinda like di JLP praising Chavez
