  • Former Cash Plus Liquidator Hugh Wildman now attorney for Ca

    Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

Former Cash Plus Liquidator Hugh Wildman has now been retained by former Cash Plus boss Carlos Hill to represent him in the liquidation process of his companies.

Wildman, the former Trustee in Bankruptcy made the announcement today in the Home Circuit Court when he applied for Hill’s trial to be adjourned.

He told the court that his instructions were that there had been some developments from an ongoing process which should result in the depositors of the failed scheme being in an advantageous position in relation to benefits.

Following discussions with Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn and Hill’s defence lawyers Valerie Neita Robertson and Deborah Martin, the case was set for trial next week Monday.

Llewellyn said she wanted Wildman to provide some real verification on Wednesday to show the sincerity of his client.

She also said the case was ready to proceed to trial and warned that if Crown witnesses do not cooperate she would be asking for warrants for their arrest.

Llewellyn said since Wildman was asking for a few more days to finalise certain arrangements which will benefit the depositors, the Crown was prepared to delay the matter until Monday.

Justice Paulette Williams in granting the adjournment expressed concern about the delay, pointing out that the case has been before the court since 2007.

Hill is charged with fraudulently inducing persons to invest in Cash Plus and fraudulent attempting to induce persons to invest the scheme.

Cash Plus went into liquidation in 2008.

About 40,000 depositors are owed approximately $10 billion.

    More Cash Plus money found

    (2009 Article)

There is good news for Cash Plus depositors this afternoon (October 5).

The liquidator of the failed alternative investment scheme has identified US $25 m, reportedly belonging to Carlos Hill.

Efforts are now being made to get the money sent to Jamaica to be paid out to depositors.

Thousands of Jamaicans have lost billions of dollars in money they invested in Cash Plus hoping to reap returns in high interest payments.

The company collapsed last year and was put into receivership in March.

At the time, it was said to have more than $5 b of investors money. More than 40,000 Jamaicans were said to have invested in it.

The news about the US $25 m (or more than JA $2 b) came at a Press Conference in Kingston this afternoon.

Trustee in Bankruptcy and Liquidator for the Cash Plus Group, Hugh Wildman said the money was identified stashed away in bank accounts in Dubai, in the Middle East.

Mr. Wildman says efforts will be made to have the amount transferred to Jamaica so depositors will be able to get back their monies.

At the Press Conference, Mr. Wildman said that the funds were discovered two weeks ago by a British Team, employed by the liquidators.

Legal moves are being made to get the money from the Dubai bank.

In the meantime, Carlos Hill who headed Cash Plus was served an injunction today, for him to disclose any other additional assets.

Mr. Hill is facing fraud charges, in connection with the failure of Cash Plus.

Mr. Wildman says he will be going to the Supreme Court to get a declaration that the US $25 m belongs to the Cash Plus depositors.

He says after he gets the declaration, he will send it to the lawyers representing the liquidator in Dubai for them to take legal action to retrieve the money.

The liquidator also received freezing orders for all assets.

It is being reported that the bank in Dubai says it’s governed by Arabic laws and is putting up opposition to the money being retrieved by the liquidator.

Former liquidator, but I agree this is very inappropriate.

This Wildman guy has a colorful history. He got in some corruption problems when he worked in Grenada in the financial services. Before that he was DPP there and was very controversial.
