Calls for the removal of police involved in beating of former PNP candidate
There are calls Tuesday afternoon for the removal of the policemen allegedly involved in the beating of former People’s National Party (PNP) candidate, Dr. Jeptha Ford.
The calls have come from some of Dr. Ford's political colleagues who are reportedly upset that no word has been forthcoming from the Police High Command or the Professional Standards Branch in relation to the fate of the policemen.
According to them the policemen should be taken off front line duty pending the outcome of the investigations.
The former politician was severely beaten, allegedly by a member of a police team at his business place early Monday morning.
Dr. Ford who remains in hospital has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and assault at common law resulting from the altercation with police personnel Monday.
However he has reportedly taken up a $100,000 station bail offer.
Meanwhile, there is no word on whether the leadership of the Peoples National Party has received a report on the incident.
Although Dr. Ford is listed as seriously wounded there are reports that he is steadily recuperating.
There have been contrasting reports from so-called onlookers, the police and members of the political directorate about what happened.
One version is that the altercation was sparked by a dispute over persons who were being allowed entry to an event at the Port Henderson facility free of cost.
Another is that the row was fuelled after a relative of Dr. Ford resisted attempts by the police to enforce the Noise Abatement Act by shutting down the set.
It is reported that Dr. Ford intervened and pulled his licensed firearm, when a member of the police team retaliated.
Dr. Ford was taken to the Greater Portmore Police Station in an unconscious state and rushed to the Spanish Town then the Kingston Public Hospital.
