Major Investigation Task Force probes murder of 2 copsSenior members of the Major Investigation Task Force are now conducting intensive investigation into Monday's killing of a policeman in Payne Land in South West St. Andrew. Constable Michael Haughton, who was attached to the Mobile Reserves, died from gunshot wounds he received after gunmen attacked a police foot patrol team in Payne Land.
Head of the St. Andrew South Police Division, Superintendent Derrick Knight, told the RJR News Centre that the police are now searching for the suspects behind the shooting.
Head of the Police's Criminal Investigation Bureau, Assistant Commissioner Denver Frater, and other senior detectives visited the crime scene Monday and spoke to residents in the area.
Constable Haughton was a member of a Foot Patrol team, which was ambushed by gunmen on Payne Avenue just after 9:00 on Sunday.
The incident took place close to a basic school where the gunmen were firing their weapons.
The policeman was shot in the back and taken to hospital where he died at approximately 2:00 on Monday.
Since the start of the year eight policemen have been killed and several wounded.
The Police Federation says it is saddened by the killing of Constable Michael Haughton.
Speaking with RJR News, Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Raymond Wilson, said the killing of police personnel must stop.
How about, "the beating of civilians by police must stop!"
