Transport Minister Dr Omar Davies says he has suggested that a private sector team be assembled and present a proposal to the Government for the expansion of the Ian Flemming International Airport.

The airport, which is named after the famed British author, was upgraded to an international port of entry between 2009 and 2010 and officially opened in 2011 to target the upscale tourism market.

However, because of its short runway and other physical limitations, the airport has not been able to accommodate some of the larger aircraft.

As a result, a number of local private sector leaders have been pushing the Government to expand the facility.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Dr Davies said he had a telephone conversation with one of the private sector individuals pushing for the expansion and invited him to assemble a team and present their proposal to the government.
