  • Jamaica On A Mission? What Mission?

    Claude Clarke, Contributor

If you were told of a country which boasts over half a century of unbroken democratic government and was blessed with the most desirable of climates; a country that sits on reserves of important mineral assets, with a remarkable variety of micro-climates and soils that impart unique characteristics to its food and spices, your response would probably be: there is no such country.

If you were told of a nation that has long enjoyed preferential access to the world's most lucrative markets and the productive technologies they create; a society that has produced individuals who have excelled internationally in every field of human endeavour, physically, creatively, academically, entrepreneurially and politically, with a culture that delights the world, your response would probably be: there is no such country!

And if you were to be told that that country, along with war-ravaged Congo and economically floundering Greece, had among the worst average economic performance in the world during the last 10 years, your response would probably be: There is no such country!

But there is. Jamaica, with all its blessings, has managed to record an average annual growth of 0.6 per cent, spanning three political administrations in the last decade.

This "mission" thing is of fundamental importance...It is so fundamental a prerequisite for progress that it's instructive that most Jamaicans ignore it.

We are basically individualistic and self-absorbed as a people... a critical cultural weakness when it comes to success in cooperative ventures like nation-building and project execution... but wonderful as it relates to individual achievement... like singing, dancing, running fast and world class yapping

Even this Vision 2030 plan we have pegged DY to... it has fatal weaknesses.

Who knows about it other than the title? If a poll was taken my guess is that less than 5% of Jamaicans could name anything significant about it (as the forum is a high-performing group maybe 10% here )
The framers of that plan never engaged Jamaicans broadly in it .... so there is very little knowledge, buy-in or ownership of the plan... so it is unlikely to succeed. Maybe we need a patois version of that plan

Jamaica needs a mission defined and supported not just by remote technocrats....but by the man in the street.

          Jamaica needs a Social Contract

These plans were never mean't for people to buy. It is just smart sounding, headline getting for people to say they are working towards something when they are not.

Time we cut the crap and start work. No matter the sweet name, from we having so eoconomic improvement and lifting our social status it is not going to work. Vision 2030 never left the press conference that started it.

A plan is needed...one just can't "start work" in a vacuum. One doesn't build effectively without a plan in place.

It's vital that the NATIONAL plan has buy-in from John Public
