  • Signs of the time. Jamaica 50, celebrate and owe

The finance ministry has been called in to assist in making payments to contractors for work done on jamaica fifty celebrations held earlier this year. Cvm investigations revealed that proceeds from the celebrations under-performed, leaving the ministry of youth and culture struggling to pay its bills. We were digging for answers as to why the 2012 festival song winner abbygaye dallas has not yet received her prizes. In newswatch tuesday, dallas revealed that a car, five hundred thousand dollars and a promotional video for her winning song 'real born jamaican' had not yet been handed over. On wednesday, however cvm received reports that it's not just dallas who has been patiently waiting for payouts from independence and jamaica fifty celebrations. A sub contractor and a contractor spoke with our newsroom saying they have not yet been paid for work done on one leg of the jamaica fifty celebrations. The contractor who asked to be anonymous, told us that while there was no specific date set for when he will receive the almost seven hundred thousand dollars owed to him, he was expecting payment after the jamaica fifty celebrations. He said he was last told that he would receive payment in late november or early december. To date, he hasn't. A government source revealed to cvm wednesday that dallas, the contractor and several other persons were to be paid from sponsorship proceeds from the jamaica fifty celebrations. Revenues from the events however underperformed as only about 75 per cent of sponsorship funds were received. Some 200 million was expected but only about 160 million was received. Revenues from merchandise such as the jamaica fifty pins are also reportedly slow. Cvm news further understands that the ministry of finance has been called upon to plug the shortfall. The culture ministry is to get at least fifty four million dollars from the finance ministry to settle the outstanding bills. In addition, cvm news understands that the administration is turning to the tourism enhancement fund for an amount of 30 million dollars to inject into the jamaica cultural development commission, jcdc, to pay its outstanding bills. The source says the monies are expected to be handed over in another two to three weeks. It means the culture ministry's creditors will have to wait until the first week of january before receiving any payment. Efforts to reach youth and culture minister lisa hanna for comment were unsuccessful.

‘Sass, boss, a little paragraphing would have helped on the (readers’) eyes. This was a teeny-weeny bit challenging to read.
