  • One of the best band Jamaica had to offer

They had the sound, creativity and the vides whether in the studio or on the stage.

We really miss these creative players like Roots Radics from the studios. Big up Flabba Holt and the crew.

Seen Roots Radics several times in performance as back up for Israel Vibration.

Israel VIBRATION AS you'all know is my favorite reggae group of all time. I have ALL their recordings!!

Like all great bands Radics have captured a certain sound.

First, I’m 100 percent in agreement with you that “we miss these creative players like Roots Radics from the studios.” This has been my refrain on this forum for years! As I’ve argued here, our music has suffered because the creative musicians have been replaced by guys who go by the much flaunted name “producer” and who create today’s rhythms and sounds, despite the fact that they have very little musical background or knowledge.

On the other hand, I sometimes find it difficult to evaluate reggae bands, as rarely does anyone do -- or show that they can do -- something that makes you go “Wow!” This is because the emphasis is usually on a tight rhythm in 4/4 time, with everyone basically being anchored by the bass and drums. The music is just not cerebral, and many/most of the musicians are basically self-taught in the most limited/limiting of ways.

To make matters worse, reggae riffs are simple and repetitive (for example a simple I, II, V7 groove) and, unlike jazz or rock or country music, rarely is there a brilliant soloist who breaks out of the groove. Take for example Roots Radics with a saxophonist of the caliber of Headley “Deadly Headley” Bennett. This outstanding man had to make a living off his music, but he would have been much better placed if he were, say, in New York playing jazz or ska!

This is why I was so highly impressed when I first saw the video of Morgan Heritage live in, I believe, the Netherlands. On that tour the group took along a dreadlocked lead guitarist who was, to put it mildly, brilliant! (I posted that video here several years ago.)

That guitarist (I never learnt his name) was obviously schooled in the finer aspects of rock soloing, and his extended solo on “Don’t Haffi Dread,” complete with harmonics, hammer-ons, etc. was an absolute beauty to listen to and see! Brilliant technique and creative taste!

While I understand your plight, music on a whole moved in that direction. An example is Stevie Wonder use to be one of my favorites until he started playing and composing all his songs and they all started sounding the same.

The fact is for Indie labels who use to sell 45s and make a good money to go towards an album or go back in the studio, this is not there anymore and so it get harder and cost a lot less than to have a band in the studio. Ask many of the experience producers and they will tell you.

I like to hear distint sounds in music and originality and yes it is harder to hear as people take short cut and also payola in the music business. I think only by encouragement and support for the the good people who are making music that it will pay.

I can gurarntee you that roots radics left the studio to be a touring band for Isreal Vibration because of gurantee compensation in the older days.
