BBM 7 Lets BlackBerry Users Talk for Free

While RIM is jazzed about the launch of BlackBerry 10, the company recognizes that current BlackBerry users still hunger for updates to their devices. So on Tuesday, RIM basically gave all of its customers free phone calls.
BBM voice is a new BBM 7 feature that brings free Wi-Fi voice chat to the messaging service. It works like Skype or other VoIP apps, but instead of launching a separate app to talk to fellow BlackBerry enthusiasts, users can initiate a voice chat from within the BBM application. RIM says the new feature will work with current Bluetooth and wired headsets. Plus, BBM BFFs can continue to send texts and pictures to one another while in a voice chat.
But before you fire up that BlackBerry Bold and dive into App World, know that BBM 7 is still in beta and works only with BlackBerry 6 or higher. Fortunately, the beta is open to anyone who wants to sign up at BlackBerry Beta Zone.
No word on when BBM 7 will come out of beta, but the BlackBerry 10 launch on Jan. 30, 2013 is probably a safe bet to see the service pushed to all devices.
