The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EoJ) has raised alarm at what it says is a sharp increase in the number of ineligible persons who have been using illegal methods to get on the new Voters' List.
<SPAN class=news_body>These include persons below the voting age as well as foreigners.
It is reported that several under-aged persons have presented fraudulent documents in an effort to get enumerated.
According to the EoJ, the trend has been identified in several constituencies.
Director of Elections, Danville Walker, told RJR News that in one instance a group of Haitians attempted to be registered for the new Voters’ List which is scheduled to be published in May.
His pronouncement follows recent reports that both major political parties are racing to get supporters enumerated ahead of this weekend's deadline.
Under the law, only Jamaicans above the age of 18 and Commonwealth citizens who have lived in <SPAN class=kLink style="FONT-WEIGHT: 400; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: blue! important; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana,Arial; POSITION: relative">Jamaica</SPAN> for more than a year can be placed on the Voters' List.
With this Saturday being the deadline for enumeration, the EoJ is on alert to prevent ineligible persons from being included on the List.
Mr. Walker also issued a strong warning to political representatives to desist from illegal practices in order to get unqualified persons on the Voters’ List.
He has threatened to embarrass individuals who continue to indulge in these practices.
Senior officials of the People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) have denied knowledge of the EoJ's allegation.
However, PNP Chairman Robert Pickersgill says his party has made it clear to its political representatives that electoral misconduct will not be tolerated.
JLP General Secretary Karl Samuda says the party will take strong action against any member <A class=kLink oncontextmenu="return false;" id=KonaLink2 onmouseover=adlinkMouseOver(event,this,2); style="POSITION: static; TEXT-DECORATION: underline! important" onclick=adlinkMouseClick(event,this,2); onmouseout=adlinkMouseOut(event,this,2); href="http://www.radiojamaica.com/news/story.php?story=34244&category=2#" target=_top><SPAN class=kLink style="FONT-WEIGHT: 400; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: blue! important; BORDER-BOTTOM: blue 1px solid; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana,Arial; POSITION: relative; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">found </SPAN><SPAN class=kLink style="FONT-WEIGHT: 400; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: blue! important; BORDER-BOTTOM: blue 1px solid; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana,Arial; POSITION: relative; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">guilt
