    Observer vendor's daughter graduates with honours

    OBSERVER vendor Althea Smith's face shone with pride last Friday evening as she watched her daughter Neveta Sutherland graduate with first-class honours from the University of the West Indies with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degrees.

    "I am feeling very happy," said Smith, who greeted Sutherland with a kiss after the ceremony, which saw thousands accepting their degrees on the UWI, Mona campus.

    Earlier this year, the 52-year-old was featured in the Jamaica Observer for having worked hard and saved meticulously over the years to finance her daughter's university education.

    In addition to selling newspapers, Smith opened a laundromat in 1996, which, although not very profitable, helped send Sutherland through her first year at UWI. Sutherland, who helped her mother sell the papers all through medical school, later earned a full scholarship from the Ministry of Education.
