  • Gallup's daily poll finds 50 percent of likely voters prefer

    Romney
By Daniel Strauss - 10/16/12 03:58 PM ET

About half of all likely voters would pick Mitt Romney for president if the 2012 presidential election were held today, while a little less than half would reelect President Obama, according to Gallup's daily tracking poll.

In a new poll released Tuesday, Gallup found 50 percent of those polled said they would vote for Romney if the election were held today, and that 46 percent would vote for Obama. The pollster noted that Romney has consistently kept a small lead over the president in the Gallup seven-day rolling average in the aftermath of the first presidential debate at the beginning of October. Romney is widely considered to have been the winner of that debate.

Prior to that first debate, Obama held a small lead in most national polls. Romney has consistently held at least a 2-percentage-point lead over Obama since Oct. 11, Gallup found.

Broken down by gender, Romney holds a double-digit lead over Obama among men, 57 percent to 43 percent. But Obama leads Romney among women in the poll, with 53 percent saying they would pick the president over Romney to win the presidential election in November.

A number of recent polls have been trending in Romney's direction. A USA Today/Gallup poll on Monday found Romney surging ahead of Obama in a dozen or so battleground states. The poll found that in those states, 51 percent of likely voters preferred Romney, over 46 percent who prefer Obama.

The latest Gallup finding came on the day of the second presidential debate, to be held in a town-hall format at New York's Hofstra University. The poll was conducted among a random sample of 3,100 registered voters and 2,723 likely voters, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

If that is true at this stage he has a great shot at winning! ...however, I am cool as I dismiss that poll!

Whether or not the poll is accurate is irrelevant, as its objective is to sway voters' perceptions, preventing Obama's supporters from voting.
The media have always been a propaganda apparatus, effective in changing the way people think.
Some are saying Obama should be more aggressive, this would only give ammunition to his critics that are eager to hand victory to Romney. He wins the debate by making sound arguments by adducing facts. Remember, once a victor is declared by the media, everyone runs with it.
Personally, Obama foreign and to lesser degree domestic(as it relates to civil liberties) policies have been a disappointment, but if anything, he doing what the republicans would, ergo Obama should be reelected.

Nonsense Rockman! Was that your view when the same Gallup poll had Obama ahead by 4 points before the debate ? How were they discouraging Obama supporters then?

Enough of the conspiracy theories, Obama was ahead and he screwed up badly and it has damaged his campaign. That is just reality.

You have to be sure of my views then to determine what I am saying to be nonsense, right?
Maybe I thought he was leading by far more.

Just responding to your suggestion that the polls are all rigged. Sure, some non-scientific polls are not to be taken seriously and are meant to cause emotional response. But those are easy to identify.

For example if Fox News or drudgereport.com puts up an online poll asking "Do you think Obama was born in Kenya" I would expect it to find a majority saying YES. That is not a scientific poll. But the big boys who make their living off polls of all kinds and have a track record have too much invested in getting it right within their margin of error to be brushed off that lightly.

What happened in FL was voter suppression and THAT is an even bigger threat this time around. No question about that.

Tings nuh bad. You must drop in pon the forum more often man.
