If expecting handouts is the definition of socialism...So then is the USA in your Romneyan worldview.... at least 47% socialist and largely members of the party you appear to support

Jamaica productive class have left Jamaica yeeears ago. Jamaica is market for other more productive countries.
And who constituted this so called "productive class" of the good old days yeeears ago??

Don't be ridiculous...Jamaica has never had a "productive class" worthy of the name...Babylon robber barons, traders, speculators and margin gatherers...yes. An innovative, nation-building productive class...no

Funny thing is I believe socialism can work but them forgot to tell the massive that them to pay back loans, that everybody have to pay taxes and you can't just tek what other people have because you think it justify, instead you have to be productive and Entrepreneurial.

Socialism can work...if by socialism one means social democracy as practiced by Scandinavian countries like Norway, Denmark & Sweden

Generally they have the world's highest living standards and excellent outcomes in health, education and other social indices

The basis of their success is a very informed, educated population free of destructive tribalism and willing to cooperate for the common wealth of their country

In the current Jamaican environment of JLPNP tribalism allied with mass ignorance and selfish elite groups promoting class divisions...socialism would never work in Jamaica...in fact capitalism will not work either

The fact is people hold governments accountable and until Jamaicans hold every MP, Every minister accountable. set basic standard and pretty much give the good ones a chance regardless of party nothing will happen even when a Rasta party or one big party.

All that you speak of does not happen in a vacuum ...it begins with an enlightened population...

....Not the tribalistic rabble (exemplified here by personalities like Lazie, Ben & Jawge ) we have now which the JLPNP matrix benefits from

You will always have some so call tribalist. The problem is when the educated class, analyst and community organisers are not doing their job. they become chearleaders instead of seeking the facts and solution.

Of course there will always be tribalists...we know that.

The problem is what is the dominant philosophy created by the political system....whether that philosophy is tribal or national in focus

In Jamaica's case tribalism is dominant..... That tribal philosophy must be condemned as a matter of absolute priority...capice??

The interesting thing is that since I haved lived in the US it has become much more tribalistic and continues to trend that way. Very few independent groups, journalists, opinion shapers anymore. Given the charged atmosphere and more recently the clear intent to supress voter turnout, I do not think the US that far away from a violent political event.

PM diplomatically immune to Trafigura investigation, says lawyers

5:25 pm, Mon September 24, 2012

Lawyers for PNP President and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller today declared that she now enjoys diplomatic immunity and cannot be ordered to give a statement to the Dutch government in the controversial Trafigura investigations.

The issue was raised this afternoon at the start of the constitutional challenge by the Prime Minister to the request of the Dutch authorities for her to give a statement in the Trafigura affair.

Mrs Simpson Miller's attorneys are stoutly opposed to the request by the Dutch authorities for her to give a statement about the 30 million dollars given to the PNP by the Dutch company, Trafigura Beheer, in 2007 during the political campaign.

PNP Chairman Robert Pickersgill,Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell, former MP Colin Campbell and businessman Norton Hinds are the other persons challenging the application.

But at the start of the proceedings the attorneys contended that the Prime Minister and the other claimants could not be compelled to give any statements to the Dutch authorities, which is investigating Trafigura Beheer.

During submissions this afternoon, lead attorney Bert Samuels declared that Mrs Simpson Miller is now the Prime Minister of Jamaica and therefore enjoys diplomatic immunity.

He said at the time of the request, she was the Opposition leader.

Mr Samuels said that status has changed since January when she was sworn in as Prime Minister.

He argued that under section 21 of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty she cannot be compelled to give any statement to the Dutch government in its investigations of alleged corruption.

He added that the Director of Public Prosecutions who is the Central Authority representing the Dutch government in Jamaica, should inform them of the changing status of Mrs Simpson Miller. Mr. Samuels insisted that the Prime Minister cannot be asked to give any statement, adding that the current case is one of futility.

He urged the court to revisit the 2010 court ruling which ordered Mrs Simpson Miller and the others to give a statement.

The three member panel which said it was caught by surprise by Mr Samuels gave him time to present the legal authorities which give the Prime Minister immunity.

In the meantime, the attorney for Mr Paulwell, Debra Martin, this afternoon argued that the Trafigura money was a political donation to the PNP.

She reminded the court that the claimants have not been treated like normal witnesses in a case.

She said they have been stripped of their constitutional protection in giving a statement.

She added that Mrs Simpson Miller and the others were ordered to give statements in open court which is highly unusual. Ms Martin further argued that the Dutch government is probing a case of corruption and bribery, adding that her client cannot be compelled to give a statement that might be used against him.

The hearing continues tomorrow.
