PNPYO calls for resignation of Owen Ellington
Police Commissioner Owen Ellington is coming under pressure this afternoon from the People's National Party Youth Organisation.
In a statement, President of the PNPYO, Junior Rose, called for the immediate resignation of the Police Commissioner.
According to Mr. Rose, the alarming number of extrajudicial killings involving police personnel and what he describes as the little effort or success from the Police Commissioner in stemming this frightening trend warrants the resignation of the Police Commissioner.
The PNPYO says it's concerned that Commissioner Ellington’s tenure has been one fraught with the killing of hundreds of Jamaicans by the police.
According to the YO, since Commissioner Ellington's appointment in April 2010, the nation has seen an increase in extrajudicial killings.
The PNPYO argued that to date, those numbers remain high.
The PNP's Youth arm outlined 22 reported shooting incidents involving members of the security forces dating from April 2010, when a student was allegedly killed by the police in Savanna-la-mar.
The recent shooting of Kayan Lamont in Yallahs St Thomas was also highlighted.
The PNPYO says the reported increase in extrajudicial killings and what it says is a decrease in the respect for citizen’s rights to life, suggest that it is time for a new Commissioner with a new vision and direction to assume leadership of the JCF.
In closing, the PNPYO reminded all lawmen that their duty is to serve, protect and reassure with courtesy, integrity and proper respect for the rights of all citizens and not to be crudely branded as judge, jury and executioner due to egregious actions.
