The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is calling for the creation of a policy which speaks to the storage, transportation and management of hazardous materials in Jamaica.
In a release issued today spokesperson on the Environment, Dr. Horace Chang said the development and implementation of a comprehensive policy should be made a priority by the Ministry of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change.
His call comes almost 48 hours after a tanker overturned spilling oil along Port Royal Street in Downtown, Kingston.
Reports indicate that some of the gasoline got into the Kingston Harbour before fire personnel had a chance to clean up.
Dr. Chang wants an assessment done on the impact Monday’s spill had on the fisher-folk in the area.
He said the oil spill coupled with the Portmore gas leak highlight the need for established guidelines.
He believes the policy will also guide the Ministry on how to treat with those affected.
