KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police on Monday arrested and charged a man believed to be the main suspect behind a major cyber crime offence involving the posting of nude photographs of women on a local website.

The man has been identified as Ronald Oates of a Kingston address.
He has been charged with breaches of the Cyber Crime Act and extortion, among other offences.
Oates is expected to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court next Wednesday.
The police allege that Oates would hack into women’s email account and threaten to post nude photos of them if they did not pay him.
According to the police he demanded between $10,000 and $20,000 for the photos not to be put online.
The highest amount he has received from one person is $150,000, the police said.
They added that the official number of women affected is 25, but the number could be in the 100s based on information unearthed when they arrested the 27-year-old suspect.
In the meantime the police are urging people to be sensitive about what they send via email and always strive to use a password that is difficult to breach.

    Cops arrest alleged internet hacker
    2012-08-31 12:14:35 | with audio | (0 Comments)

    Livern Barrett, Gleaner Writer

The police say they have arrested a major player who is believed to be behind a computer hacking ring that was extorting money from hundreds of persons, so as not to post sexual explicit photos of them on the internet.

The Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), said 27-year-old Ronald Oates, who had been under surveillance for months, was arrested at his home on Monday.

He was charged this morning under the Cyber Crimes Act and the Larceny Act.

Oates is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court next Wednesday.

Deputy Superintendent Dwight Daley, who is the head of operations at OCID, said so far 25 victims have come forward.

However, he said investigations have revealed that hundreds of persons have been affected by the scam.

Daley said a majority of the victims were from Kingston and St. Catherine, but stretch as far as Manchester.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, head of OCID, acting Senior Superintendent Clifford Campbell, said a search of Oates’ home turned up several computers, cell phones, wireless modems, thumb drives and telephone SIM cards.

The Star newspaper first reported earlier this year that several persons, including a top Jamaican entertainer, had complained that they had been contacted by the operators of a website, who demanded money to return sexually explicit photos removed from their phones and personal computers.
