    Corruption charge!
DPP rules against businessman, senior cop, politician
    Tuesday, August 21, 2012

DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn has ruled that a senior cop, a politician and a well-known businessman be charged with perverting the course of justice.

According to information reaching the Jamaica Observer, the businessman at the centre of the debacle was pulled over by a police officer and ticketed for a driving offence. The businessman, the Observer was told, offered to cop $2,000 to drop the charge. But, the cop rejected the offer and proceeded to cite the businessman with bribery.

However, a call was made to the politician who then called in the senior policeman — a superintendent. Both attempted to press the police officer to let the offence slide, the Observer was told.

Those attempts were however staunchly resisted by the police officer.

According to a well-placed source, the senior cop then signed a document in the stead of the officer indicating that the case had been dropped in a last-ditch attempt to prod the junior policeman to brush the offence under the carpet.

The matter was, however, reported to the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, resulting in a file being prepared and handed to the DPP who subsequently ruled that the three be charged with corrupting the course of justice.

The summons are expected to be served today and the three are likely to face the court tomorrow.

The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that three prominent local figures are facing possible charges of perverting the course of justice.

They are: West Portland MP Daryl Vaz; a prolific senior superintendent of police; and, a powerful St Andrew businessman with close ties to the Jamaica Labour Party.

Last night, we were unable to reach the senior superintendent or the businessman for a comment on the matter.

However, Vaz reported that he has heard about the likely impending charge.

He also said he has learned that the charges relate to a traffic violation.

But Mr Vaz insists he was not the offender in the matter.

He also said he would be seeking to get more details on the reported development today.

The Director of Public Prosecutions reportedly recently handed down the ruling against the three.

I was wondering why dem tekking so long to release di names.

I now need to know what was the traffic violation. We want full disclosure!

Don't think for a minute that I am basking in the knowledge that Vaz is the politician accused. I am sure this sort of thing happens with politicians from both sides of the aisle (duh!).

They should all be exposed and prosecuted! Tenk God mi nuh have nuh money fi bribe nuhbody!

definately should be exposed. It seems like these names are never in the public paper and are always protected.

I don't care who it is, they should pay. Corruption is corruption.

want to know how vaz name can call and no one else's?

muadib right though (if true), this is pure idleness on the part of everyone involved. hope for their sake that they think it was still worth it ....

Don't agree that it's idleness. The corruption is the important issue now, not the little traffic violation or $2,000.

Imagine if it was something really serious, like some ICHS student being raped and murdered and somebody using his influence to pervert the course of justice?!?
