Ranking Trevor, pioneer of rap reggae killed in Jamaica
One of the leading figures of 1970s rap reggae music, has died in a traffic accident in Jamaica, aged 60.

Ranking Trevor was one of the pioneers of Jamaican rapping known as "toasting" that inspired hip-hop.

His songs, Caveman Skank, and Three Piece Chicken and Chips featured in the UK charts, where he lived for more than 20 years.

His career declined in the 1980s and he returned to Jamaica a decade later.

Born Maxwell Grant, Ranking Trevor recorded mainly for the Channel One studio in Kingston, Jamaica, which had a profound influence on the development of reggae music.

The musician's brother, Robert Grant, says he was killed on Tuesday after he was knocked off his motorcycle.

Police have not commented on the crash.

Ranking Trevor is survived by his mother, eight siblings and 15 children.

Sad. One of the real pioneer for real. Songs like "Apprentice Dentist" "Barnabas Collins" "40 days" and "Rosemarie" were some of his very good early stuff.

RIP Trevor Ranking. MyYout remember listening to the early studio one shows that use to come on early saturday morning with Winston Williams?

                Special time in reggae yes.

But dancehall music is a much more mature and overall a better genre now than it was then in its infancy.

I think the style and delivery in dancehall music is more innovative now than it was then. I'm speaking of the 70s specifically, the 80s is when things really started to change.

Not disrespecting that era still cause you haffe walk before you run.

The thing is dancehall evolved from toasting over the record. Then to two slangs and catchphrase. It was about timing and melody then.

Later on story telling and more poetry evolved. Dub Poetry can also be classified as coming from the dancehall revolution. The good artist nowadays can combine all the above to make a good tune but it is hard to capture the melody and originality of some of the elders in dancehall.

Timing and delivery was there at the start and the some of the better DJs will always have that. What I loved about dancehall then however is the abiltity of the artist to do live performance and even clash with DJ creating lyrics on the spot and the crowd respond. Today it mostly specials and mix tapes.
