TVJ kicking up a storm

Poppy Brady, Gleaner WriterTHE Olympic arena is not the only place where Jamaica is shining this year - the island's own TV company, Television Jamaica (TVJ), is broadcasting in the United Kingdom for the first time and it's been billed a "phenomenal" success.
The 10-strong TV team is broadcasting to 22 Caribbean ountries, the US Tri State, Nigeria and Ghana, and the feedback is that viewers simply can't get enough.
And when the Olympic dramas are over there are proposals to permanently broadcast popular programmes from Jamaica to Caribbean audiences in the United Kingdom (UK).
Phenomenal
Yvonne Wilks, general manager, corporate and public relations for the RJR Communications Group, said: "This is the first time TVJ has produced live broadcasts outside of Jamaica and it's been phenomenal.
"As part of Jamaica50 and the Olympics we wanted to do something spectacular that would lift Brand Jamaica as far as broadcasting and media is concerned. There was a perception that we were not in a position to compete with the BBCs and the ITVs due to limited funds, but we've shown this is not the case."
TVJ bosses have brokered a deal with Caribvision to broadcast to 22 Caribbean islands and also New York's Tri State area. Deals have also been sealed with OTV on Sky Channel 199 and BEN TV on Sky Channel 182, which are also available to viewers in Nigeria and Ghana.
Wilks noted: "It's very simple. We provide them with the feeds and they provide us with the markets. Through these alliances we are able to do live broadcasts.
"The feedback has been amazing. We've had emails from our audience saying they've been rushing back home early to watch us. Relatives have been told not to ring at certain times because people are busy watching. We've brought them all a little bit of Jamaica."
Smile Jamaica, TVJ's number one morning show which has 72 per cent of the market share, is going for gold in the UK and proving to be a real hit. It broadcasts between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Jamaican time, and 12 noon to 3 p.m. in the UK.
Co-hosted by one of Jamaica's top sportscasters, Dahlia Harris, and UK Olympic golden girl Tessa Sanderson, the dynamic duo are providing a constant stream of up-to-the-minute interviews on all the Olympic action.
Some of the recent highpoints have been interviews with Jamaica's Olympic swimmer Alia Atkinson and equestrian Samantha Albert.
