Conceptualized and Founded by its Executive Chairman, world renowned Jamaican scientist Dr. Henry Lowe; the Bio-Tech R&D Institute Ltd. (Bio-Tech R&D), a Jamaican company, was designed to develop and commercialize nutraceuticals (nutritional additives delivered in the form of supplements, beverages, and fortified foods), pharmaceuticals, and cosmeceuticals (natural products to enhance hair, skin and nails) from indigenous Jamaican plants.
It is been proven that Jamaica has 84 of the 160 established medicinal plants of the world. This national resource has been underutilized and holds significant potential for the development of the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries in Jamaica, and for the economic development of the country on a whole.
Since its inception, Bio-Tech R&D has launched over seven (7) nutraceuticals, including its flagship product The Alpha Prostate Formula, a supplement with anti-cancer properties, as well as five (5) medicinal herbal teas and tea blends.
Dr. Lowe has recently forged a relationship with Anticancer Biotech (Beijing) Company Limited, through its General Manager, Dr. Meng Yang; a special affiliate of Bio-Tech R&D. Dr. Yang will be arriving in Jamaica to represent his biotechnology firm, an international company dedicated to cancer and HIV/AIDS research and development for drug discovery.
Bio-Tech R&D Institute and Anticancer Biotech will be joining forces to solidify a collaborative research and training programme in Jamaica and China, toward broadening the reach of Bio-Tech R&D Institute, by introducing its products into the Chinese market. This holds significant economic potential for the Jamaican nutraceutical industry, as well as the country’s overall economy.
This monumental occasion will be formalized at a launch event in the Savannah Suite of Eden Gardens, 39 Lady Musgrave Road, Kingston 10 on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
It is envisaged that this next major step by Bio-Tech R&D Institute will assist with the promotion and strengthening of S&T for national development, as well as demonstrate how this partnership could enable the implementation of wealth creation through cancer drug development and manufacturing for the local and international markets.

About Dr. Henry I.C. Lowe
Dr. Henry Lowe, a scientist who specializes in medicinal chemistry, has contributed over 40 years in the fields of science and technology, energy, the environment, wellness and health sciences nationally, regionally and internationally. As a result of his outstanding work in these areas he has earned several recognitions. He has also served on several public and private sector boards. Dr. Lowe is not only recognized as one of the regions outstanding scientists but also public servant, author, educator and successful entrepreneur.
A former Permanent Secretary for the Government of Jamaica, Dr. Lowe researched and established the first Ministry of Science & Environment in the CARICOM region. He served as President & CEO of Blue Cross of Jamaica, and also Chairman. Dr. Lowe is currently Executive Chairman of the EHF Group of Companies, which includes the Bio-Tech R&D Institute Ltd (Bio-Tech), established in 2010. Through the application of biotechnology to a variety of human challenges and needs, opportunities will be created to enhance the quality of people's health and lifestyles.
He has published over 20 books, including “Discovering the Future - The Emergence, Development and Future of Science and Technology in Jamaica”, “ The Miracle Herb- Rediscovering Aloe Vera”, “Jamaica’s Ethnomedicine – Its Potential in the Healthcare System”, and “ The Wellness Handbook – Your Guide to Healthy Living”. He has also published over 100 articles in the areas of science, technology and the health sciences for journals and the popular press.
Dr. Lowe holds many awards and accolades, including the Jamaica Observer Business Leader Award (2006) and the CCRP Living Legend Award (2012). He is also a member of the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

About Dr. Meng Yang
Dr. Meng Yang, General Manager and Senior Scientist at AntiCancer Beijing Co. Ltd., has a solid background (over 19 years) in medical and surgical sciences and clinical medicine (both Western and Oriental Medicine). He specializes in in-vivo drug screening, especially in efficacy evaluation of anti-cancer agents, as well as animal surgery, microsurgery and developing disease models in animals. Dr. Yang has extensive knowledge and experience in molecular imaging, particularly, in the area of utilizing fluorescent proteins for monitoring gene expression in vivo and tumor imaging for small animals; developing transgenic mice; and hair follicle stem cell research. Dr. Yang is the holder of two (2) US patents and one (1) patent each for his research on hair follicle stem cells in China and Japan, respectively.
He has written and collaborated on over 83 international publications, and written abstracts for over thirty six (36) scientific meetings of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Additionally, he has participated in numerous lectures and seminars internationally. Dr. Yang is the recipient of many scholarships, honours and awards and is a member of the National Cancer Institute Review Panel. He humbly acknowledges himself as an independent, well organized team player.
