  • JLP wants full-scale probe into Petrojam

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) wants a full-scale investigation into the operations at Petrojam.

It’s suspected that illegal unloading activities are to be blamed for the release of fumes which sickened 17 employees and caused the closure of the Portmore toll road in last month.

Yesterday Environment Minister Robert Pickersgill stated that the noxious fumes may have escaped during off-loading activities at the Petrojam Pier.

It was further reported that 260 barrels of petroleum products were stolen from the refinery.

Against that background, Opposition spokesman on Energy, Gregory Mair says the Energy Minister Philip Paulwell needs to intervene in the affairs at Petrojam.

Mair says enough has been revealed to indicate that all is not well at the company.

Meanwhile, Petrojam has called in the police to determine the circumstances leading to the emission of the hazardous fumes.

The findings from an investigation have revealed that the noxious substance was petroleum-based.
