Opposition Spokesperson on Tourism and Travel Service Development, Mr. Edmund Bartlett yesterday in his Sectoral Debate presentation outlined seven recommendations to the government that are essential to the successful development of the tourism sector. He pointed out that dark clouds have gathered on the horizon and urged the Government to act quickly.
The seven recommendations are as followed:
- Confirm that the tourism industry is an export industry and move with speed at implementing fundamental and sensible tax reform that would be based on the results of the Tourism Satellite Accounts, the Ministry’s Impact Study and the report of the Competitiveness
- Committee led by Hotelier Josef Forstmayr.
- Create space for the local manufacturers and agricultural producers to be treated as exporters who support the sector.
- Move quickly at implementing the Development Order for Montego Bay’s Hip Strip.
- Provide adequate funding for Tourism Marketing and enable a planning cycle which will allow for greater efficiencies for the purchase of advertising and promotional material
- Convert cruise visitors to stopover visitors. Engage the JTB, TEF as well as tourism partners, to plan and implement consumer trade shows at cruise ports to market directly to cruise passengers, showcasing the best of Jamaica, along with incentives and giveaways.
- Jamaica must establish strong and mutually beneficial partnerships with airlines and ensure that the infrastructure to facilitate the new generation of aircrafts which will connect new markets are established. Further, Airports costs must be made competitive and we need to move forward in having a true regional carrier.
- In the spirit of Jamaica 50 celebrations let us recognize Jamaica’s Tourism icons and give them the credit that is due to them for their incredible foresight and resolve
