• Jamaica's export earnings up 14.3%

Jamaica's earnings from the export of manufactured goods increased by 14.3 per cent last year.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Anthony Hylton says Jamaica earned a total of US$739.2 million from the exportation of manufactured goods in 2011, up from the US$646.7 million earned in 2010.

Speaking at a workshop put on by the Planning Institute of Jamaica yesterday, Mr Hylton said the statistics for 2011 show that the increased earnings came in both traditional and non-traditional manufactured exports.

Earnings from traditional manufactured exports increased from US$97.4 million dollars in 2010 to US$114.2 million last year.

Non-traditional manufactured exports were valued at US$625 million last year, a 14 per cent increase when compared to 2010.

Ja outperforms the Caribbean in foreign direct investments - UN report

Jamaica reportedly received US$242 million in Foreign Direct Investments in 2011, a 5.8 per cent increase over the US$228 million in 2010.

The data is contained in the latest World Investment Report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development which was released on Thursday at a seminar held at the JAMPRO offices in New Kingston.

JAMPRO President, Sancia Bennett-Templer, says the increase in flows to Jamaica is a step in the right direction, coming off the global economic recession.

She says Jamaica outperformed the wider Caribbean, which saw a decline of 3.6 per cent.
