The Book Industry Association of Jamaica, the BIAJ, says the government has agreed to remove the 16.5 per cent general consumption tax, GCT, on books.
Director of the BIAJ, Franklin McGibbons says the assurance was given by both the financial secretary Dr Wesley Hughes and his deputy yesterday after several days of negotiations on the issue.
The tax on books, which was announced by Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips during this year’s Budget debate, had faced stiff opposition from the BIAJ.
Up to late today there was no confirmation from the Government that the tax has been removed, but Mr McGibbons says the BIAJ was advised that an announcement would be made.
He says the BIAJ is making the information public because it will impact parents who have already started their back to school shopping.
