    Posted by admin on Jun-19-2012

San Juan, Puerto Rico - The Jamaica national team (2-0) got his second victory in Centrobasket, 80-64, on U.S. Virgin Islands (0-2), in a game held at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

"This is a good win for us," said Coach Pollack. "some of the guys felt to 25 point loss to USVI last summer in the CBC championship, but we were only there to qualify and we did just that."

Yesterday Jamaica got a victory with 30 points advantage over Cuba, today took a 16 advantage to dominate his first two games in the tournament. Now prepare to face off with Dominican Republic tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. (local time) and México on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., in its two most important games on this first round.

Meanwhile, U.S. Virgin Islands had been defeated by México and will have to wait until tomorrow to try to get his first win against Costa Rica at 1:00 p.m.

Center Kimani Ffriend broke his nose in the second quarter and had to leave the game, his return is questionable.

Walter Hodge got a three-point shot that gave Virgin Islands an early lead, 6-1, with 7:29 of the first quarter. But Akeem Scott responded with five points in a 7-0 rally from Jamaica, to turn the score 8-6, with 5:07. Iván Aska tied the game at eight and both teams changed baskets to end the period tied at 16.

Samardo Samuels again draw to 21 and broke the tie from the free throw with 8:13 of the second period. Scott completed a three-point play to give advantage 25-21 to Jamaica, remaining 7:57. Aaron Brown scored six points ahead of returning the Virgin Islands national team, 34-31, at the end of the first half.

After a tie at 38 points, Scott made a three-point shot and completed 17-2 run and Jamaica increased the advantage 55-40, with 3:34 of the third quarter.

Samuels scored a jump shot to give the biggest lead in the game to Jamaica, 78-56, remaining 3:30 to play.

Scott was the best in the game with 23 points; Samuels added 20 with nine rebounds, Weyinmi Efejuku Rose 17 and Patrick Ewing Jr. 10. Hodge led the Virgin Islands offense with 20 points and Aska had 11.

      Jamaica and Centrobasketball

Jamaica more often than not underperforms in basketball in this region, especially in the case of the men (despite the losses by our women recently). Even if our men defeat the British Virgin Islands, they still have to face the US Virgin Islands, one of the most powerful teams in the region.

To make matters worse, Jamaica may eventually have to face other strong teams like Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Cuba in this year’s Centrobasketball Championships.

Despite a couple of wins in CARICOM basketball competitions in past years, our basketball program still has some ways to go before we start impressing. Last year not even the presence of highly regarded players like Patrick Ewin, Jr. and other US-based players helped Jamaica very much.

        Wrong Forum, Bruce

I just realized, after posting my reply, that Bruce started this thread in the wrong forum. It should have been in the Other Sports forum.

we cannot be all things to all people. we just do not have the resources but we do some things well, VERY well, up to and beyond world class standards, better than some with more resources.
