OPPOSITION Leader Andrew Holness says that the Government has been turning an opportunity for economic growth and development into a crisis.
A favourable political climate has been created by the "frank and forthright" stance of the Opposition in areas of national interest, which has been acknowledged by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"We have given critical support. We have pointed out the errors, but not in a nightmare fashion, like staging street protests or trying to divide the nation. But, despite this, this budget has turned that opportunity into a crisis," Holness said.
He added that the IMF has insisted that the Government press ahead with tax reform, but the Government, instead, foisted on the people a tax package "which is inequitable and will further impoverish the country".
Holness said that only a strong, forthright and truthful Opposition could have brought the Government to admit its errors and promised that his party would remain a strong, united and solid opposition.
"We are going to make sure that this Government clean up the mess they have created," Holness said, adding that the Government could not use the excuse of a a global economic crisis or a disloyal Opposition for its failures.
"We have paid a political price for getting rid of the loss-making enterprises... now let us see them use some of their political capital, once and for all, to build Jamaica," the Opposition leader said.
