  • Revision of some tax measures

People's National Party, PNP, insiders say there will likely be a revision of some of the tax measures which were recently announced by Finance Minister Dr. Peter Phillips.
Details are expected this afternoon when Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller makes her Budget Presentation.
This comes in the wake of unease over the revenue measures which took effect on Friday.
Word coming out of the PNP is that the Party's hierarchy has been assessing the negative feedback at the grassroots level as well as from some of its members to the increased taxes.
Most of the complaints have been against the placing of General Consumption Tax, GCT, on previously exempt food items such as patties, canned corned beef, milk based products, buns and syrup.
Political Commentator, Helene Davis-White, says she expects the Prime Minister to respond to the negative reaction from the public as well as the Parliamentary Opposition and take the necessary action:
The Prime Minister's Budget Presentation will be carried live on RJR 94 FM,TVJ and Jamaica News Network (JNN).
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
