  • Inspirational Principal moots JC to lead Jamaica's Renewal

Major Changes Produce Improved Performance At JC
    Published: Wednesday | May 16, 2012

Ruel Reid, principal of Jamaica College (JC), has pledged to shift the transformational agenda at the Old Hope Road-based institution to new heights.

He notes that over the past six years there have been phenomenal changes at the school under the direction of a new management team, a dynamic R. Danny Williams-led board, the Jamaica College Foundation and the Jamaica College Trust.

"We want to help reshape Jamaica for the next 50 years," Reid told an awards dinner of the New York Chapter of the JC Old Boys' Association in New York on Saturday night.

He told his audience at the LaGuardia Plaza Hotel that there have been significant improvements in discipline and order on the school campus; accountability at all levels; and the academic performance of students. The JC principal told the old boys that there was a more caring and nurturing environment for students at the institution. "There is no Jamaica College student who cannot get any kind of assistance that is genuinely needed," he declared.

    Academic and social change

Reid pointed to the financial help for the transformation agenda from corporate Jamaica and old boys, including a $50-million donation from Karl Hendrickson, and a $20- million refurbishing and expansion project by Philip Gore, past students.

The principal highlighted improved performance of students in all areas, including sports and the academics. "The school recorded a 100 per cent increase in the number of distinctions received over 2010 in mathematics and a 50 per cent increase in the number of distinctions in English language," at the CSEC level, reported Reid.

For the school's success so far, he heaped praise on members of his team, senior managers, senior teachers, faculty, administrative and ancillary staff, student leadership, parents, students, old boys from New York and Canada, "and others for the tremendous support provided in making JC a number one school again".

Looking to the future, he said: "Let me assure you that the Board of Governors, the Jamaica College Trust and the school's administration are all determined to ensure that we remain a school of excellence in all areas of school life.

"We wish to encourage investments in maritime, ICT, agro-processing, creative industries, etc. We want to partner with the diaspora to build a better Jamaica. We are onetenth the size of our economy due to mismanagement and crime and violence. JC must lead the way is rescuing our country.

"Jamaica College will be the institution of first choice, for students, for teachers, for administrative and ancillary workers, for all who pass through the hallowed halls of the Jamaica College campus."

The JC Old Boys New York Chapter honoured four persons at Saturday's event — R. Danny Williams, Sabrina HoSang, Dr Kwame Dawes and Wayne Seaton

This is quite a turnaround story. Just goes to show what can be accomplished when you have strong leadership and participation from all the interested parties.

They waited for leadership, namely Dr the Hon. R Danny Williams, OJ

You will not find leadership in Government nowadays...quite the opposite

Very true. And it also helps when you have a school board with people who are visionaries; not the dead squad ones, who only attend board meetings for the refreshments - SIGH!
