CONSTRUCTION OF 1,320 housing solutions, primarily for tourism workers, in two communities in St Ann, will begin this year under the Jamaica Economic Housing Project funded by the China Ex-Im Bank.
For the current fiscal year, $1.3 billion has been allocated to start construction to upgrade housing solutions in Belle Air I, Belle Air II and Mount Edgecombe in St Ann.
China Ex-Im Bank has also funded other major projects in Jamaica such as the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme and the Palisadoes Shoreline and Road project.
The Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing is the implementing agency.
Breakdown of work
A breakdown of the work to be done this fiscal year involves the design, construction and supervision of 150 service lots, 23 one-bedroom units and 10 two-bedroom units at Belle Air III. Design, construction and supervision of 260 service lots at Belle Air II will also be done this year.
The project summary set out in the Estimates of Expenditure tabled last week in the House of Representatives states that affordable housing solutions would also be constructed in St Elizabeth.
The Jamaica Economic Housing Project is just one of many projects that parliamentarians will today begin to examine as they comb through the voluminous Estimates of Expenditure which set out Government spending on a multiplicity of programmes for the current fiscal year.
It is expected that members of parliament will turn out at Gordon House in their numbers, as the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament, comprising all members of the House, start a detailed examination of the document.
