  • Stage Show for Slave Memorial Funding

On Tuesday 15 May at 7 p.m, the United Nations will present a special gala concert in the historic General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters in New York, in support of a Permanent Memorial to Honour the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

In line with this year's remembrance theme, "Honouring the Heroes, Resisters and Survivors", the special concert will feature a unique lineup of performers representing the various regions of the world affected by slavery and will celebrate the vibrant musical and cultural traditions which emerged from slaves' resistance to slavery during and after the 400 years of the Transatlantic Slave Trade throughout the world.

Featuring performances from THIRD WORLD BAND of JAMAICA, MBAYE DIEYE FAYE and SING SING RHYTHM of SENEGAL, CHEN LO and and THE LO FREQUENCY of the USA; and RACHELLE JEANTY of HAITI and Master of Ceremonies APRIL SUTTON, Award Winning Broadcaster from BET, the purpose of the concert is to raise awareness of the history and tragedy linked to slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, recognize those who fought against slavery in the past and those who fought and continue to fight against the lingering consequences of bigotry, racism and prejudice that have plagued our societies, as well as to raise the necessary funds to erect a permanent memorial at UNHQ.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Acting Head of DPI, Mr. Maher Nasser and Ambassador Raymond Wolfe of Jamaica. Calls will be made to support the efforts to build the permanent memorial to honour the victims of slavery at UNHQ and pledge forms will be available at the concert for the audience to make tax-deductible contributions to this cause.
