Was Trafigura repaid? - JLP questions whether PNP has sent money
    published: Wednesday | March 7, 2007

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) yesterday demanded the governing People's National Party (PNP) answer almost a dozen questions related to claims that it had returned the $31 million controversially donated by Dutch oil trading firm Trafigura Beheer.

Responding to the claims made last week by PNP general secretary Donald Buchanan, the JLP stressed that the scandal had yet to come to an end as many questions remained unanswered.

    The questions posed are:

Why has the PNP not yet provided documented proof that the money was returned?

Why was the money returned to Trafigura despite the revelation by Trafigura Beheer that the money was part of a commercial transaction?

How will the Government deal with the possibility of Trafigura refusing to accept the money?

If Trafigura accepts the money, will they acknowledge receipt of the funds?

In the interest of transparency will the PNP disclose to the public where the $31 million was sourced?

If the money was sent to Trafigura, how was the payment made?

If the money was returned in cash, does this violate international regulations concerning the movement of cash across international borders?

If the money was returned by wire transfer or bank draft, which bank was involved and were the reporting requirements met?

What bank account or bank accounts were used to facilitate the transaction?

If no bank account was used what method was used to have the money transferred?

The Prime Minister has said consistently that the PNP was raising funds from the little people, was the money to repay Trafigura contributed by the little people?

The JLP said it wanted its questions responded to as soon as possible and that, if the questions are not responded to, further action would be taken.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
