There are currently 20 female heads of state in the world. The best-known is Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany. Merkel was elected in 2005, which makes her the longest-serving head of state.

Of the 20, three ascended to their post after the incumbent was impeached, resigned, or died. One was appointed, and two were appointed and elected later.

There is a separate list for monarchy and Governors General.

Switzerland is actually elected for a 1 year term form the 7 member cabinet. Parliament does the electing and its a cross party thing.


The Swiss Prez is more like the GG in Jamaica (ceremonial), but also has his/her Cabinet responsibility which is the real meaty job.
