ON Friday, April 20, 2012, the owners of the iconic Tastee patty brand, Vincent and Valerie Chang, buried their youngest son, Warren, marking the final chapter in a human tale of sorrow that only loving parents can truly appreciate.
Warren was severely brain-damaged when he fell into a swimming pool at 11 months old and 'died' for nearly 30 minutes before he was found. Since then, the love and devotion of Vincent, Valerie and their other three children to their unfortunate kin represent a moving chapter in the Chang family story.
It is a tragedy that Vincent and Valerie said they would have unhesitatingly given all their wealth to prevent, if only such a sacrifice could undo that terrible thing inflicted on an innocent child 34 years ago.
Valerie Chang devoted the last three decades of her own life to caring for her son in Miami, Florida; ensuring that he had the best quality of life that money could afford and the love that only a mother could give.
Warren Vincent Chang passed away peacefully on March 2, a little over a month after celebrating his 34th birthday in Miami. A service of thanksgiving was held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, followed by interment at Woodlawn Park South Cemetery in that Florida city.
Vincent Chang started the family business called Tastee 46 years ago, building it into a Jamaican institution that is a tribute to hard work, sacrifice, and the ingenuity of a Chinese baker who covered himself in dough, both literally and figuratively.
