Rough baptism for 1st time MP Paul Buchanan

TOUGH and challenging are words being used by first-time parliamentarian Paul Buchanan to describe his first three months as the representative for the vast West Rural St Andrew constituency.
Buchanan, who sits on the Government's side of the House, created an upset in last December's General Election when he uprooted the Jamaica Labour Party's Andrew Gallimore.

Looking back at his activities over the past three months, Buchanan told the Jamaica Observer that despite the challenges, he has been making progress in his bid to represent constituents.
According to him, several roads which were in varying stages of disrepair have been patched.
"The major roads we are fixing now include the Brandon Hill to Mount Zion, the King Weston Road, we have also completed the patching of the Rock Hall Road, all the way from Red Hills to Rock Hall, and we have done some work in sections of Old Stony Hill Road, as well as along several feeder roads," he said.
Buchanan said he had also succeeded in fulfilling a campaign pledge of establishing a more neutral office for the MP.
"The office located in Golden Spring is not in any [political party] colour, it is beige, and it is the office for all the people. So far, we have worked on almost 1,000 files, ranging from applications for educational support to support for small business persons," he explained.
The parliamentarian said he will be committing significant resources to youth development, and indicated that work on an initiative to train 200 software developers is at an advanced stage.
According to him, the main training centre will be located at Oberlin High School in Lawrence Tavern. However, training will also be provided at other schools and community centres throughout the constituency.
The training will focus on the development of reggae music software, robotics and games. The committee implementing the project is led by an engineer and includes several other computer experts who are members of the Information Technology (IT) group.
"These youngsters will be trained to develop software products. We have not gone on the production path as far as IT is concerned in Jamaica," he declared.
Buchanan said the project is being supported by the Social Development Commission, and will receive funding from his Constituency Development Fund, as well as from private sector contributions.
