No wage increase for public sector workers

The government has signalled there will be no wage increase for public sector employees this year.
The disclosure, which was made by Labour Minister Derrick Kellier this morning, comes weeks before the Budget for the new fiscal year is tabled in the House of Representatives.
It comes even as Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips is holding discussions with the unions that represent public sector workers.
Public sector employees have been operating without a contract since the last agreement expired in March 2010.
However, speaking to The Gleaner Power 106 News Centre , Kellier said the government is operating within strict fiscal guidelines and appealed for understanding from public sector workers.
Meanwhile, the Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA), has confirmed that it has received a request from the Government to forego a wage increase.
However, JCSA President, Oneil Grant said that request is still being considered.
According to Grant, the last wage package for public sector workers expired in 2010 and the government has requested that they forego an increase for the fiscal years 2010 to 2012.
Grant said it is not unthinkable for public sector workers to agree to forego a wage increase this year, but adds that this would only come after a careful analysis of the implications.
