    • What would seem strange to some has become the norm for them as 10-year dispute rages on
Anastasia Cunningham, News Coordinator For the past 10 years, the Williams family has been embroiled in a dangerous family feud that has seen them carrying out heinous acts against each other, with a growing hatred that seems to be spiralling out of control.

In fact, it could be safe to say this family doesn't need any outside enemies. They are doing quite fine on their own destroying each other, physically and mentally.

The long-standing internal war is so deeply rooted, it now spans three generations and it doesn't appear to be close to a resolution.

More than 60 years ago, David and Alice Williams acquired one and a quarter acres of a deep, rugged, sloping valley property, nestled in the hills of Fern Hill district, Unity, in rural St. Andrew.

The union produced 12 children - Headley, Mavis, Linton, Claire, Cherry, Joyce, Stanford, Harry, Merle, Mitzie, Sharon and Dimple - who they supported through farming the land.

In 2001, when the parents died, the children inherited the property and each mapped out a part of the land for themselves and began to build their own home.

But the unity of the once close-knit family began to unravel in 2002 over the matter of Cherry's daughter, Michelle Phipps, wanting to cut a pathway down to where she wanted to build her home.

One family member vehemently objected to Michelle cutting the pathway, taking action to prevent it. Depending on who you asked, her grounds for objecting were any of a number of reasons.

The rest of the family sided with Michelle and attempted to convince the objector, but she would not budge. Instead, she and her children joined forces and launched out against the rest of the family.

    Insistence leads to 'war'
Michelle got to cut the pathway, but that was the beginning of the enmity that continued to escalate to dangerous, outrageous levels.

Headley, Cherry, Harry, Linton and Mavis walked away from it, each deciding to make a home for themselves somewhere else.

What would seem strange to some has become the norm for this family.
Machete attacks; stonings of individuals and their homes; attacking each other's children; destruction of each other's property, including crops; gathering of faecal matter in plastic bags and throwing it across each other's property; throwing used sanitary napkins on each other's roofs, leaving them to soak into the rainwater they catch for usage; non-stop cursing and calling each other the most derogatory names "from mawning 'til night"; slandering each other in public, sometimes over a loudspeaker for the rest of the community to hear; malice - several of them don't speak to each other and they have banned their children and grandchildren from having any form of interaction or communication with each other.

This is all part of the daily life of the Williams family.

The deceased parents must be turning in their graves.

Let me hope the family can save themselves!

      ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Over the years, the Williams family has kept the Lawrence Tavern police quite busy, having to make countless trips to the property to quell one quarrel or another, following the endless complaints being lodged.
With the burden that this family feud has been placing on the justice system, the authorities decided that enough was enough. They had to get to the bottom of it and try to bring an end to it once and for all.

On Easter Monday, Justices of the Peace (JPs) Lebert Halliman and Coreen Dennis from the Corporate Area Petty Session Court, JP Winston G. Williams from the Lawrence Tavern division, District Constables Orrett Hardy and Noel Davis from the Lawrence Tavern Police Station, along with a Gleaner team, made the perilous journey to the source of the feud.

Looking down into the valley at the property, it was unclear what would cause so much hatred among one family.

Dotting the sloping property were eight concrete homes - each with a farming plot - that houses the now 35 family members spanning three generations.
The fertile property was bursting with numerous crops and fruit trees of all kinds, in addition to chicken coops, pig and goat pens, while a few cows lazed around.

It was also unclear how they found the energy to keep up with this long-standing feud, as it took a serious level of skill and energy to navigate the treacherous terrain from one home to the next. The pouring rain only added to the slippery peril.

      Charges and countercharges
Gathered inside Michelle's home, the family members who were willing to participate in the dispute-resolution session unburdened the many issues that have been fuelling the feud.

"I literally live in fear and terror ... ," Sharon passionately stated, pointing an accusatory finger at one relative's children.

After a resounding agreement from other family members, she repeated that statement several times.

They began to recount the many times one of that relative's children, who was not there for the meeting, inflicted wounds on them. He was accused of chopping his uncle Stanford on different parts of his body, chopping cousin Michelle on her right arm, attempting to strangle his 15-year-old cousin. And the list goes on.

His mother denied that her son did any of the things he stood accused of.
"Then why him spend six months in jail?" Stanford asked her.

Even that the mother denied knowledge of, to the amazement of everyone else.
Charges and countercharges began flying all around the room, creating a head-spinning whirlwind at the incredibility of what they accused each other of. Each person was pointing fingers at the other, deferring the blame. Everyone had a different recollection of who did what and who were the troublemakers. All had selective memories.

      Resolution doubtful
At the end of a four-and-a-half-hour attempt at a resolution, it was doubtful if that was even possible.

It was clear some wanted a truce to put an end to it once and for all. Some wanted the family to return to live in peace, love and unity once again. Others just wanted to be left alone to live in peace, without having anything to do with the other family members. Others were adamant that there was no end to this. Some have admitted they have no love for other members of the family and that the hurt was too deep to forgive and forget.

"Mi can't deal with it nuh more. Mi want us live loving as a family. Mi want it finish, me tired of it!" exclaimed Michelle.

At the insistence of JPs Halliman and Dennis, they made a feeble pledge to try to live as a family in peace and do away with the acts of cruelty against each other.
But as one family member puts it, "Dem just a put on 'cause unno deh yah. Unno nuh know dem. This nah done. As soon as unno gone, a deh so it start. Nuh mek dem fool unno, yuh hear. Yuh nuh know dem people yah."

Glad you posted this because at times the same trend can be seen on this board. I for one refuse to be dragged in into the trenches of division.

There is this talk that PSM is a buffoon yet as PM she gives out evenly (labourites ah get to) Ja is rife with mechanisms that promotes division until these mechanisms and devices are removed; the effects will be seen even on this site.

The good Garvey said there is politics everywhere; once people are gathered together. He even went on to say one should not seek to avoid politics because maybe just maybe when you get to heaven you may find politics there. A serious truth lies in the above argument.

See therein lies the problem. At times it's hard to face the realities of life. In the bible even Jesus had the problem;read where James and John came to him asking for one to sit on the right an the other on the left when the master teacher ascended to the throne. That would be equal in today's time to ask for COO and CFO respectively. Politics i everywhere; religion, military, profit, nonprofit, education et al. Can't escape it.
