    Finance Minster says country at a point of "do or die"

    Sacrifice...
    This is how Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Peter Phillips describes the steps that will have to be taken to see the country on stable financial footing.
    Speaking on TVJ's Smile Jamaica program on Thursday April 5 Dr. Phillips said the country is at a point of do or die.
    According to the Finance Minister all will have to be done by his administration to lessen the load of the debt that Jamaica now carries.
    Dr. Phillips pointed out that the country was at a very critical juncture and that tough decisions would have to be made.
    He added that the government now has the challenge of creating an environment that is conducive to investment and production.
    However he says this will not be enough as creating conditions that are favourable so that citizens honour their obligations to pay taxes is also of great importance.
    Dr Phillips said in order to lower debt the country is at a point where it will have to make some difficult decisions.
    He also said there are no plans on the cards for layoffs in the public sector noting that steps will have to be taken to contain the government wage bill

        As I told Sass last evening, there are those for whom Peter can do no wrong.

        When he came out and spoke how the sugar divestment deal was dead, there were jackasses that believed him, only for the deal to be finalized the following week.

        When Shaw spoke of the need to quickly address tax reform, the ************** was an obstacle, now seeit deh ... budget delay until May. But of course he can do no wrong.

        When the talk of pension reform came up ... he went out shouting bout loss of jobs etc ... again ... now he is faced with it.

        Now him a talk bout do or die.

                      Same old rerun dis. Nothing new. New govt setting the bar as low as possible.

                      In a year I expect to hear that the economy is "poised" for growth even as nothing has changed.


                      Collect some taxes and reform the public sector and I will be impressed.

                        Since some were living under a rock or was eager to push out the previous gov't they must have missed it. Man in the hot seat say is do or die.
                        1. There was a need to sell C.A.P. something that was happening, not certain where things stand since this transparent gov't came into office. One thing is certain, Shaw was "doing".
                        2. There was a need for tax reform. When the previous minister wanted to address it aggressively, he was labelled overly ambitious. Well, the budget has been delayed by 1 month to accommodate tax reform. Look like Shaw was right. Again Shaw was "doing".
                        3. Reduction of the wage/GDP ratio. When the previous gov't implemented the wage freeze, they were called "wicked and uncaring." There were ongoing discussions on how to deal with the issue, yes, there were some resistance by the unions. Now that Mr. Know it all at the time was 2nd guessing Shaw ... he now has the hot seat ... he is now facing the same issues. We now hearing about possible wage freeze again. Shaw was "doing".
                        4. Pension reform: Another issue that was being addressed. The last discussion I heard there were some disagreements on what the gov't proposed and what the unions wanted. Again Shaw was "doing".
                        Do or die. Y'all rejected those that were 'doing'. So what now?
