Ska and Rocksteady
Over a year ago, I highlighted a crucial point that you kept missing in your (commendable) one-man effort at making ska and rocksteady mainstream once again. The point I’m referring to here is this: Jamaica’s music didn’t move away from ska because of pressures from outside our cultural environment. Today, no Jamaican band shows any interest in playing ska, except at independence celebrations when people like Myrna Hague and other jazz musicians, and also the band Fab 5, will play the music for nostalgia’s sake while being paid by the Jamaican government for their effort.
Very few people in Jamaica today have an active interest in ska. In fact, producers of major entertainment shows such as the Jamaica Jazz Festival realize fully this fact!
On a personal level, I enjoy ska, and I’m fully aware of the contributions of the many dedicated Jamaican horn, string, keyboard and percussion musicians who contributed to this genre. However, ska will never return to the forefront of Jamaican music simply because very few, if any, active Jamaican musicians are interested or inclined to record or perform ska and rocksteady.
Culturally, we have long evolved away from these two rudimentary genres.Comment
