Opposition: Falconer should resign over Bloomberg report den

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) wants the minister with responsibility for information, Senator Sandrea Falconer, is to resign claiming that her credibility is now destroyed.

According to the Opposition, there is now now clear evidence that Falconer misled the nation in respect to comments made by Prime Minister Simpson-Miller in a Bloomberg interview in Montego Bay last week.

Opposition Spokesman on Information, Senator Arthur Williams, says the statement attributed to Simpson-Miller, was vehemently denied by Falconer who was also reported as saying a note was being drafted by the Government to send to Bloomberg for allegedly misrepresenting the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister is reported as saying: “If we could get a bailout like Greece, lord have mercy, you would see Jamaica grow and flourish."

But Williams says now, in the face of Bloomberg sticking to its story, and clearly having a recording of what the Prime Minister said, Press Secretary Lincoln Robinson who works directly under the supervision of Senator Falconer in the Office of the Prime Minister has admitted that the Prime Minister did in fact make the statement, thereby giving the lie to Senator Falconer’s denial.

Senator Williams said that the JLP, while insisting that Senator Falconer is duty bound to resign, noted that she must however tell the country the truth as to how she came to make the denial.

Senator Williams further said the Opposition is calling for the Prime Minister to be more responsible in her utterances and to properly inform herself on the fundamental issues facing the nation in order to avoid any repeat of such a situation which can affect the country’s reputation in the local and international capital markets.
